Challenge Level

Things To Do
Alta is all about the skiing so there isn't as many off-slope activities compared to other resorts. Activities at Alta include:
- Backcountry Tours
- Cat Skiing
- Heli Skiing
- Snowshoeing
Accessibility
Alta’s close proximity to the airport means you can plan an arrival before mid-morning and be on the slopes just after lunch! A shuttle bus is your simplest and most reliable option if you’re staying in Alta’s village. Someone else does the driving and you don’t have to worry about overnight parking! If you have more than four people in your group or family, then renting a car may be a cost effective way to go. It’s also helpful if you want to visit anywhere other than Alta or Snowbird. Otherwise an Uber (or Uber Ski if you have gear) is an option as well.
Recommended Airport:
- Salt Lake City Intl. Airport 32 miles (40 minute drive)
When To Go
Early January-mid March is the best time to visit Alta. Alta Ski Resort’s season usually begins in early December, but for best snow coverage – especially in advanced and expert terrain – consider going between early January and mid-March. This also keeps you clear of the Christmas vacation rush, when the mountain is crowded and rooms tend to be more expensive. Later in the season, there’s usually a powder storm or two in April and it’s easy to follow the sun to find the best conditions at different times of day. By the end of the season, it’s common for temperatures to get over 40 tempF, which isn’t all that great for the snow, but does make for some pleasant outdoor eating and après!
